Get information from official and reliable sources in the event of an emergency.
To stay safe during a disaster, stay inside and pay attention to radio, television, or online broadcasts from official news sources. You will get important information about the situation, and instructions about what to do. For example, if you must shelter in place—at home, school, or work—OR if you should evacuate and go to an approved evacuation center.
Before a disaster, make sure you have a solar-powered and/or hand-crank radio (that can pick up emergency channels) as part of your family emergency kit. During a disaster or other emergency, listen for instructions about where to go and what to do. Do not go out unless instructed and limit phone calls. Text instead of call if you can. Help keep phone lines clear for emergency calls.
