Dedicated to strengthening Hawai‘i’s communities through volunteer service and preparedness.
What is the MRC
The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is part of a nationwide network of more than 900 volunteer units dedicated to strengthening public health and emergency preparedness. Founded after the 9/11 attacks, the MRC recruits and trains both medical and non-medical volunteers to support their communities before, during, and after emergencies. Through training, volunteer service, and emergency response, Hawaiʻi MRC members help build healthier, safer, and more resilient communities across the state.
How the MRC Helps
The Office of Public Health Preparedness works with the Hawaiʻi Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) to strengthen the state’s ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from public health emergencies, disasters, and other threats. MRC volunteers support preparedness efforts year-round by participating in trainings, exercises, community outreach, and emergency response activities.
During emergencies, MRC volunteers may:
- Support emergency shelters and community reception centers
- Assist with vaccination and medication dispensing operations
- Provide health education and preparedness outreach
- Support logistical, administrative, and communication functions
- Assist with community recovery efforts following disasters
Whether serving in medical or non-medical roles, MRC volunteers help expand Hawaiʻi’s public health response capacity and strengthen community resilience before, during, and after emergencies.
